Describe how petroleum was formed in the earth.
Answer :
Millions of years ago, the microscopic plants and animals which lived under the sea died and their bodies were covered with mud and sand at the bottom of the sea. In the absence of air or oxygen, the chemical effects of pressure, heat and bacteria converted these remains into petroleum oil and natural gas. The petroleum thus formed got trapped between two layers of impervious rocks (non-porous rocks) forming an oil trap.
