Difference Between JEE Main & JEE Advanced Syllabus 2020

JEE Main Vs JEE Advanced Syllabus: If you are one of those students of class 12 who want to take admission in the top engineering colleges of the country, then you must be targeting the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations.
Though both the exams are interrelated, there lie some differences between the two exams. We have compiled the major differences in the difficulty level and the syllabus of both the examinations. We have also discussed some of the general differences between these JEE Main and Advanced syllabus exams.

Syllabus Differences in JEE Main & JEE Advanced 2020

Let us start with the subject-wise distinction of the syllabus of JEE Main and Advanced.

JEE Physics Syllabus 2020

Topics included in JEE Main but excluded from JEE Advanced

  1. Electronic Devices: Semiconductors and semiconductor diodes, forward and reverse bias, I-V characteristics of photo-diode, solar cell, and LED, Zener diode as a voltage regulator, junction transistor and its characteristics, transistor action, transistor as an amplifier (common emitter configuration), transistor as a switch, and oscillator.
  2. Electronic Waves: Definition of electronic waves and their characteristics, transverse nature of electronic waves, applications of EM waves, and the electromagnetic spectrum.
  3. Communication System: Propagation of electromagnetic waves, amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, signal bandwidth and transmission medium, and the block diagrams of the basic elements of the communication system.

Topics included in JEE Advanced but excluded from JEE Main

1.Thermal Physics: Kirchoff’s laws, Newton’s laws of cooling, blackbody radiation, absorptive and emissive powers, Stefan’s law, and Wein’s displacement law.

JEE Chemistry Syllabus 2020

Topics included in JEE Main but excluded from JEE Advanced

  • Biomolecules: Definition of biomolecules, classification, and functions, nucleic acids, and the chemical composition and functions of RNA and DNA.
  • Chemistry in everyday life: Study of the cleansing action, and chemical agents such as soaps and detergents, chemicals in foods such as artificial sweetening agents and preservatives and their examples and usage. Study of the examples and usage of chemicals in medicines such as analgesics, tranquillizers, antibiotics, antiseptics, antihistamines, antifertility drugs, antimicrobials, and disinfectants.

Topics included in JEE Advanced but excluded from JEE Main

  • Electrochemistry: Equivalent conductivity.
  • Nuclear Chemistry: Kinetics of radioactive decay, properties of alpha, beta, and gamma rays, radioactivity, and carbon dating, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion reactions, proton-neutron ratio, and its effect on the stability of nuclei.

JEE Maths Syllabus 2020

Topics included in JEE Main but excluded from JEE Advanced

  • Sets, Relations, and Functions: Representation of sets- unions, intersections, and complements, types of relations and equivalent relations, power sets, and algebraic properties of sets.
  • Trigonometry: The topic of Heights and Distances has been excluded from JEE Advanced.
  • Statistics and Probability: Calculation of mean, median, measures of dispersion, calculation of mode of grouped and ungrouped data, and calculation of variance, mean, and standard deviation of grouped and ungrouped data.
  • Mathematical Reasoning: Statements and logical operations, Tautology, contradiction, converse, and contrapositive.

Topics included in JEE Advanced but excluded from JEE Main

There are no such topics.

Difficulty Level of JEE Main & Advanced 2020

If students want to know the difficulty level of the examination, JEE Advanced is more difficult than JEE Main. In JEE Main, students are asked questions which test the general understanding of the students regarding the basic concepts of class 11 and 12.

On the other hand, in JEE Advanced, such questions are asked which test the problem-solving skills of the students and whether they are able to apply the knowledge of theory in solving questions.

General Differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced

  1. The CBSE conducts the JEE Main while the IITs conduct the JEE Advanced. JEE Main is the eligibility test for the students to appear for JEE Advanced, by clearing which they can get admission in the IITs and ISM.
  2. JEE Main consists of two papers - Paper 1 and 2. The first paper is for those who want to take admission in the B.E. and B.Tech courses, while Paper 2 is for those who want to take admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses.

On the other hand, for JEE Advanced, candidates will have to appear for both Paper 1 and 2, to get admission in the engineering courses.

  1. JEE Main can be taken 3 times consecutively, while JEE advanced can be taken only 2 times consecutively.

We hope that now you know every subtle difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. We advise you to appear for both the upcoming exams with a detailed plan and stick to your preparation strategy whole-heartedly.
