RNA interference takes place in all eukaryotic organisms as cellular defense mechanism. In this process, specific mRNA gets silenced due to a complementary dsRNA molecule that binds to and prevents translation of the mRNA.
The possible source of this complementary RNA could be from a viral infection where the virus is having RNA genomes or mobile genetic elements called transposons that replicate via an RNA intermediate.
