Preparation of ethanol from ethane


Step 1: Ethane reacts with chlorine in the presence of sunlight to form chloroethane.



Step 2: Now, chloroethane reacts with NaOH to form ethanol by the replacement of Cl atom by OH.


CH3CH2Cl + NaOH CH3CH2OH
