In India, fertile soils, produced by the deposits left in banks of the rivers and these mostly found in the northern plains and in the coastal plains.
A black soil called Regur is found in the North- Western part of the Deccan Plateau. It has been formed by the weathering of basalt.
Red soils rich in iron oxides and having low water holding capacity are found in the southern and eastern parts of peninsular India.
Laterite soil is found in the Eastern and Western Ghats and in the parts of North-Eastern India. These soils are reddish, as they contain Iron and aluminium oxides.
Mountains soils occur in the mountainous regions and desert soils are found in the arid regions lying mainly in Rajasthan.
