The industrial revolution led to a large scale migration of people from the countryside to the industrial areas like Manchester which in turn gave rise to urbanization.
After Industrialization in England and the emergence of a modern city saw the following characteristics:
a. There was a fourfold increase in the population of London.
b. London expanded till the 19th century and then the city clean up led to the creation of green belts and suburban areas.
c. Industrial cities like Manchester faced large scale migration and the majority of the population was labour class working in factories.
d. Large labour class population dwelled in unhygienic slums which faced the risk of health hazards and epidemics.
e. During the world war, there was large scale employment in the industries to meet the demand. Women and children to worked in the factories.
f. At the end of the world war, there was large scale unemployment and women lost their job as the men returned from war.
g. In London, the population largely consisted of clerks, artisans, soldiers, shopkeepers, beggers, etc. as there were no such large factories in this city.
