Why sound waves are called mechanical waves?

Answer :

The waves that require a medium to propagate are called mechanical waves. They require a medium to transport energy from one point to another. Sound waves are characterised by their motion in a medium. They cannot travel in vacuum(without any medium). So, they are called mechanical waves.
