Every individual uses the mass media, for example - Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters and other service providers have a mobile telephone where they can easily get in touch, shops in the city have televisions, people wake up just to read newspaper, people use mobile phones to stay connected with the world, etc. Thus it is clear that mass media has developed exceptionally in every aspect. As students of Sociology, you should study the phenomenal expansion of mass communication because –

• In order to study and comprehend the current communication revolution, it is important one should also look at the development of Mass media in India and in the world. From this, we could understand that the content and the structure of mass media took shape due to the changes in the economic, political and socio-cultural framework. For example – in the first decades after independence, the vision of development which the central and the state had decided influenced the mass media and also the process of globalisation in the post-1990 period where market played an important role.

• Better understanding and knowledge about the mass media helps us to generate a logical relationship between the mass media and communication with the society. Both influence each other in a certain way. The role of mass media changes according to the location of the society and the influence of mass media on the society is an extremely important aspect.

• It should be important to know that mass media is totally different from other means of communication. It is because it requires the formal structural organisation to meet large-scale capital, production and management demands. It is clear that the state and the market have influenced mass media in one or the other way. Its function depends on the large body of employees and connection with the large organisations with major investments.

• Also, mass media is such platforms that different people use it the way they wanted to and there is a difference between the different section of the population on the way they use it.
