Kanauj in the Ganga valley was a prized area. For centuries, rulers belonging to the Gurjara-Pratihara, Rashtrakuta, and Pala dynasties fought for control over Kanauj. Historians often describe it as the “tripartite struggle”.
The struggle took place to have control over northern India.
In the end, Nagabhatta II attacked and took control over Kanauj, but soon he was defeated by the Rasthrakuta ruler Govinda III. His empire declined by the end of 9th century and was taken over by the Chalukya dynasty.
By the end of the tripartite struggle, the Pratiharas emerged victoriously and established themselves as the rulers of central India.
