Why did the Roman

Answer :

The Roman Catholic church began to keep an index of prohibited books because-

1. Even amongst the lesser educated working class, printed religious literature stimulated a variety of interpretations of faith in the early 16th century.

2. An Italian miller, Manocchio, infuriated the Roman church by reinterpreting the Bible in an abstract manner.

3. Such instances worried the Church about people reading the various interpretations of the religion and questioning the Church.

4. It imposed severe controls over publishers and booksellers.

Hence, it can be said that the Romans took acute measures in order to prevent the spread of anti-Catholic ideologies.
