The Roman Catholic church began to keep an index of prohibited books because-
1. Even amongst the lesser educated working class, printed religious literature stimulated a variety of interpretations of faith in the early 16th century.
2. An Italian miller, Manocchio, infuriated the Roman church by reinterpreting the Bible in an abstract manner.
