Bernier described the Mughal towns as the ‘Camp Towns’ due to the following reasons:
a. Camp towns mean towns that depended for their survival on the imperial court.
b. These towns came into existence when the imperial court moved the area and lost its importance when the imperial court moved out.
c. They became important due to the royal patronage, as they did not have any social and economic foundation.
d. During the Mughal period, 15% of the total population lived in these camp towns.
