1. In the Saigon Native Girls School, Vietnam, a Vietnamese girl sitting in one of the front seats was asked to move to the back of the class and allow a French student to occupy the front bench.
2. Consequently, she refused to go towards the back of the school and the Principal of the school, also a colon (French people in the colonies) expelled her. This incident led to major protests by Vietnamese students of that school who were also expelled.
3. As the students were expelled, open protests began to spread on a larger scale and seeing the situation get out of control, the government forced the school to take the students back.
NOTE – The French attempted at bringing ‘modern civilization’ from advanced Europe to Vietnam. Education was one such tool of modernizing the Vietnamese. The curriculum at the educational level was manipulated in such a way that the Vietnamese could only acquire qualifications that would create a labour force for the French to carry out their tasks because a highly educated class of Vietnamese would pose a threat to the jobs of the French in Vietnam.
For example- the textbooks often glorified the French and justified colonial rule.
