Why are the northern plains agriculturally productive part of India? Explain.
An area is said to be agriculturally productive if it consists of these three requirements- weather conditions, water, soil. Northern Plains have all three of them.
i. Northern Plains are formed by flooding of three major rivers- Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. These rivers are perennial rivers which flow throughout the year. Therefore, the region has plenty of water for agriculture.
ii. These rivers also deposit alluvial soil which has high fertility and makes it suitable for cultivation.
iii. The weather conditions of northern plains are suitable for the crops like wheat which needs winter or cold climate to grow.
iv. The major crops of the northern plains such as wheat, rice, sugarcane, pulses, oilseeds, and jute are grown here. It is the food bowl of India.
