NOTE – After the defeat of Napoleon, conservative rulers came to power. They did not tolerate criticism and dissent, and tried to control activities that questioned the legitimacy of the government. Censorship laws controlled what was said to the public.
Liberalism and nationalism, as feelings, arose in response and the first such disturbance took place in France. The French uprising was followed by uprising in Brussels (Belgium broke away from United Kingdom), further followed by Greek war of independence.
The French who lived in Vietnam were known as colons.
NOTE – Vietnam was colonised by the French. The impact of colonisation brought the Vietnamese into conflict with the colonisers in different areas of life.
