Which cities were developed by the British in India and why?

Cities were a very important part of the economic system of the Britishers. The cities that were developed by Britishers are mentioned below:

a. Coastal areas such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata were developed as they could easily help in the export and import of goods.


b. Cities were also considered being important in terms of defensive purpose and military engagement.


c. The colonial cities were an important link between the economic centres in Britain and the peripheral areas in colonial India.


d. Bombay was pre-planned and redeveloped. By 1900, 75% of India's raw cotton was shipped through this city.


e. Many old urban centres declined and new colonial cities emerged. Kolkata was one of such first cities.
