Most of the Europeans residences were built in the Fort of St. George, also started to be known as the”white town”. The Europeans had better residences were built because they wanted to differentiate themselves with the black people whom they considered poor and unhygienic. They had lavish bunglows with garden and other facilities. Colour and religion determined allowed the people to live in the fort. Other than English, the Dutch, Portuguese were allowed to live in the fort because they were European and Christian.
