• During vigorous exercise, there is a lack of oxygen in the muscles.

• In the lack of oxygen, the pyruvate is converted into lactic acid and energy.

• When on breakdown the pyruvate changes to lactic acid, the process is known as anaerobic respiration.

• The accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles causes cramps in the muscles.
