Age structure classification
Age-sex pyramid or population pyramid shows the distribution of various age groups in a population. As the population increases, it becomes the shape of a pyramid. It shows the distribution of the population according to their age and importance determinants like the future productive capacity of the economy can be analyzed by this.
Age structure represents the number of people of different age groups. This is an important indicator of population composition since a large size of the population in the age group of 15- 59 indicates a large working population. And other age group populations are dependent population.
The age-sex structure of a population refers to the number of females and males in different age groups. A population pyramid is interpreted to show the age-sex structure of the population through the diagram.
The shape of the pyramid reflects the structure of the population in the country. In the diagram, the left side is taken for the male and right side is for the female in all the age group in a given year. When these type of interpretation is done then the age-sex structure can be classified into 3 different types of pyramids, they are
• Expanding Population
In this type of population, the pyramid is established as a triangular form with a wide base. This will be typically seen in less developed countries where there will be more number of birth rate but also there will be the number of infant deaths.
• Constant population
This type of population will be having an equal number of births and deaths. The shape of the pyramid will be like a bell-shaped where the number of females and males are almost equal. This type of population structure can be seen in Australia.
• Declining population
This is a situation where the population growth is zero or even negative. This type of countries will have low birth and death rates, therefore, the shape of the pyramid will be mostly like a bowl shape with a low base and low top. This type of population is seen in Japan.
