Elections to the Lok Sabha are held every 5 years. After five years, the term of all the elected representatives comes to an end and the Lok Sabha stands 'dissolved'. The whole area of the country is divided into no. of constituencies. A constituency is a group of voters in a specified area who elect a representative to a legislative body. Elections to the Lok Sabha are held in all constituencies on the same day or within a few days. This is called a general election. Sometimes an election is held only for one constituency to fill the vacancy caused by death or resignation of a member. This is called a by-election.
