What happens when

When the p-n junction is forward biased, then the depletion layer of the junction decreases and the potential barrier experienced by the charge carrier also decreases. The direction

of the voltage applied (V) is opposite to the built-in potential Vo. As a result, the depletion layer width decreases and the barrier height is reduced. The effective barrier width becomes (Vo − V).
