The exhaustive ammonolysis of an alkyl halide is also termed as Hoffmann's ammonolysis.


First, primary amines are produced (ethyl amine) when alkyl halides are treated with alcoholic ammonia solution.



Secondary (diethyl amine) and tertiary amines (triethyl amine) are formed if the alkyl halide is in excess.



Tertiary amine further reacts with alkyl halide to form quaternary ammonium salt (tetraethyl ammonium bromide).
