Poverty level can be reduced through anti-poverty programs and growth of the economy. The government has started many programs to alleviate poverty. Some anti-poverty programs are Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana (PMRY), Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP), Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), National Food for Work Programme (NFWP) and National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). Despite so many efforts, poverty is not alleviated completely. Some of the reasons for less effectiveness of poverty alleviation programs are:
• It is unable to identify and target an exact number of poor families. Sometimes families who are not even poor gets benefitted by these programs.
• There is an overlapping of the same type of schemes which leads to confusion among poor people and authorities. Due to this confusion and so many schemes, no scheme is implemented properly, and the benefits of the scheme do not reach the poor.
• Overpopulation is one of the reasons for less effectiveness. As the number of poor people is increasing, the burden to provide the schemes to a large number of people is also increasing.
• Corruption at various level of implementation of schemes is another major reason.
