Read the extract
(i) Nicola meant to say that he and Jacopo did many jobs like shining shoes, selling fruits, hawking newspapers, running errands, guiding tourists to places in Verona, selling cigarettes to American tourists etc. Through these jobs, they earned money for their ailing sister, Lucia.
(ii) The speaker, Nicola is addressing to the narrator, A. J. Cronin.
(iii) Nicola was living through difficult times and his sole focus was to earn money for his sick sister. Nicola was a serious natured boy too. He wanted to keep this as a secret. Nicola was a matured boy and spoke with conviction.
(iv) The synonym of ‘looked’ is ‘glanced’. Both the words have a similar meaning to view briefly.
