Answer :
Urban waste disposal in the major metropolitan cities of India is a serious concern in recent years.
1. More than ninety per cent of the solid waste is collected and disposed of in the major metropolitan cities of India like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
2. About thirty to fifty per cent of the waste remains uncollected. These waste materials get accumulated in the streets and backyards of houses leading to several health issues.
This problem can be overcome by:
1. These degradable waste materials can be treated and can be converted into manure.
2. Plastic and other non-biodegradable wastes can be recycled and can be used in other forms.
If these materials are left untreated, they can get fermented very slowly thus releasing toxic gases like methane into the atmosphere.
