The gastric glands in the stomach secretes gastric juice which contains hydrochloric acid, pepsin, rennin, and mucous. Hydrochloric acid provides an optimum pH (1-3) for the catalytic activity of pepsin. Pepsin hydrolysis proteins. Mucous in the gastric juice prevents the damage of epithelial lining of the stomach from acidic nature of gastric juice.
