“The declining share of agriculture in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a matter of

serious concern in India.” Support the statement.

Answer :

The contribution of agriculture in the GDP is only one-fourth whereas the secondary and tertiary sector contributes three-fourth of the produce.

a. The primary or agriculture sector employs 49% of the working population, however the contribution towards the GDP is only 17%, which is very dismal.

b. This indicates that there is wastage of human resource in India. This is due to underemployment, unemployment and disguised unemployment.

c. Due to the lack of jobs, highly skilled professionals end up working in the primary sector, leading to underemployment. This skill could have been used to develop the tertiary sector rather than waste it in this manner.

d. The agriculture sector is one which is associated with underdeveloped countries. Hence, for a developing country like India, the dominance of the primary sector and also its dismal contribution is a matter of serious concern.

e. Gross domestic product is an important factor in the development of a country, hence the share of the agriculture sector either needs to be developed or the other sectors have to contribute to extensive levels.

Hence, the declining share of agriculture in the gross domestic product is a matter of concern.
