Textile industry occupies a unique position in Indian economy:
1. It contributes enormously to industrial production (14%), 4% to the GDP and almost a quarter of the foreign exchange earnings.
2. It is the second largest sector after agriculture in terms of employment generation. It employs almost 35 million people directly.
3. It is the only industry in the country that is self-reliant and produces from raw material to highest value-added products i.e. complete in the value chain.
