Adenosine Deaminase deficiency(ADA) is an Autosomal disorder which is observed in children very rarely.ADA deficiency damages the immune system, leading to Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).
SCID causes the affected people to lose all their immunity towards bacteria, viruses and fungi, thereby keep falling ill very frequently.
Symptoms of SCID include diarrhea, poor and slow growth in infants, eczema-like rashes, recurrent thrush, frequent respiratory infections, etc.
The two possible treatment methods are:
I. Bone marrow Transplant (BMT) - the defective immune cells are replaced by the new and healthy immune cells from a healthy donor who is a biological match for the patient.
II. Enzyme Replacement Therapy ERT) - this method replaces the ADA enzyme which is missing and it allows the regular and proper functioning of the immune system.
Enzymes gets denatured after sometime in the circulation. It does not have prolonged longevity of life in circulation. Hence, it should be administered regularly at periodic intervals of time.
