Suggest any three methods of soil conservation.
All organisms on earth are dependent directly or indirectly on plants for food. Plants use soil as a medium to grow which makes soil a very important natural resource. Therefore, it is essential to conserve soil.
The three methods to conserve soil are as follows:
1. Contour ploughing- Ploughing up and down the slope is considered the wrong method of ploughing. This can form channels which facilitate water flow, thus leading to soil erosion. This can be avoided by ploughing around the contour line. It hinders water flow and prevents soil erosion.
2. Terrace cultivation- This is a process in which terraces are made on the slope by cutting steps. It is beneficial in preventing erosion. Such practice is carried out in western and central Himalayas.
3. Strip Cropping - The topmost layer of soil can be blown away by winds in absence of trees. To prevent the erosion by wind, strips of grass are grown in large fields between crops. This holds the soil and works against the force of the wind. This is called strip cropping.
