(i) The ambitious project that was launched in the Narmada valley had different phases and spread over three different states of India. The two most important multi purpose dams of the project included the Sardar Sarovar Project in Gujrat and the Narmada Sagar Project in Madhya Pradesh.
(ii) Two concerns raised by the activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan against this project are as follows –
• The activists were concerned about the efficiency of the model of development that was being followed in the country.
• They were concerned about what constituted public interest in a democracy.
(iii) Since its inception, the Narmada Bachao Andolan linked its oppositions to this project with other larger issues because according to the activists the larger social costs like forced resettlement, loss of livelihood, ecological resource depletion of development projects need to be calculated to analyse the cost benefit of such projects.
