1.1 (a) Jain monks played their board game of snakes and ladders earnestly because they used to take it as a way of reflecting their personal growth. They considered that their performance in the game was dependent on how good a person was.


(b) Indian board games were not considered a ‘time pass’ because they are very ancient and involve strategies. Even the simplest of the games are very sophisticated and involved rules and goals. Even Ludo is a modified form of Chaupar, an Indian game.


(c) Gorillas are believed to be the ancestors of human beings (homo sapiens). But human beings got their brains more developed than gorillas. Human beings can play certain board games, such as chess, which gorillas cannot.


(d) It is a very sophisticated game as it requires the players to be very calculative and good at math. They need to be quick in their decisions. It was its sophistication which made the Englishmen take it to Europe and commercialize it.


(e) Besides giving a zero, India has contributed to the world by creating four very sophisticated and appreciated board games – snakes and ladders, chess, chaupar and backgammon. These games are a good way for people to brush up their minds.


(f) Frinkel says that because in board games, players need to make strategies while progressing in the game. In snakes and ladders, players were rewarded for their kindness and punished for their wickedness. This made them realize the importance of being a good person.

Here, mimic refers to a kind of simulation of real-life situations. It means to copy the situations. Hence, ‘imitate’, which means ‘to copy’, is correct.


(b) (i) serious
The Jain monks played their game very seriously and were very sincere about its rules and the teaching the game gave them. So, ‘serious’ is correct.


(c) (iii) total
Here, it means that the total score that was obtained by the players could be used by the players according to their convenience. Hence, ‘total’ is correct.


(d) (iv) comfort
Here, the author means that as long as the games are alive and the legacy of our ancestors is with us, we all can relax. So, ‘comfort’ is correct.
