Let the point 7 units away from A be B, then d (A, B) = 7 where the coordinate of A is 1.

So, we have either of the following two cases:

Case I- If A > B, then

d(A, B) = A – B

⇒ 7 = 1 – B ⇒ B = 1 – 7 = -6

Case II- If A < B, then

d(A, B) = B – A

⇒ 7 = B – 1 ⇒ B = 7 + 1 = 8

Hence, the coordinates of the required points are -6 and 8.
