We know by the property of matrices,
This implies,
a11 = b11, a12 = b12, a21 = b21 and a22 = b22
Similarly,
a – b = -1 …(i)
2a + c = 5 …(ii)
2a – b = 0 …(iii)
3c + d = 13 …(iv)
We have the equations (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv).
We need not solve equations (ii) and (iv). We will be able to solve for b from equations (i) and (iii).
Multiply equation (i) by 2.
a – b = -1 [× 2
⇒ 2a – 2b = -2 …(v)
Subtracting equation (iii) from equation (v),
⇒ -b = -2
⇒ b = 2
Thus, the value of b = 2.
