Put x = 1 in x2 + 3x – 4, we get
(1)2 + 3(1) – 4
= 1 + 3 – 4
= 0
∵ x2 + 3x – 4 = 0 on putting x = 1
∴ 1 is the root of the quadratic equation x2 + 3x – 4.
