# If x – y = 3 and

x - y = 3

y = x-3 …Equation (i)

xy = 10

Putting the value of y from above Equation (i) we get

x(x-3) = 10

x2-3x = 10

x2-3x-10 = 0

Solving the above equation by the method of factorization we get

x2-5x + 2x + 10 = 0

x(x-5) + 2(x-5) = 0

(x + 2)(x-5) = 0

x = -2,5

Neglecting the negative value

When x = 5, y = 2

x2 + y = 27
