Q. 9

“Proportion of literate population of a country is an indicator of its socioeconomic development” Explain.

Answer :

The level of social and economic development prevalent in a country is often both a cause and consequence of literacy. In a country like India, literacy rate is denoted by the percentage of population above 7 years of age, who is able to read, write and logically do arithmetic calculations up to a certain level. Higher proportion of literate population indicates that the country has sound government proposals for education and literacy along with an easy availability and accessibility of education facilities. It also indicates positively towards the social status of women in the country. If a country records lower proportion of literate population it indicates a lack of literacy avenues for the population which the government should aim to correct.
