Chapter 1: The Best Christmas Present in the World

Summary: The story begins with the narrator purchasing the roll-top desk from a junk shop which was in bad condition. As the narrator starts repairing the desk on Christmas eve, he found a letter in one of its drawers. On opening the letter, he discovered that letter was written by Jim Macpherson to his wife, Connie.

It was Macpherson’s last letter, received on January 1915. The letter described the beautiful event that happened on Christmas eve in the year 1914. Jim was the captain of the English Army. German and England was engaged in a war. But on Christmas morning, Germans greeted English and wished them and received the same response from English men. 

Then soldiers from both sides celebrated Christmas by eating, drinking, talking and even played a football match. After reading the letter, the author decided to return the letter to Connie, Jim’s wife. But when he reached the mentioned address, he found that house was caught on fire and Mrs Macpherson was rushed to a nursing home. 

When the author narrated the letter to Mrs. Macpherson, she misunderstood the author as Jim, her husband. Then she said that it was the best Christmas present in the world she ever got.

Chapter 2: The Tsunami

Summary: Caused by an earthquake under the sea, Tsunami hit Thailand and parts of India on 26 December 2004. This lesson includes some of the stories of people who experienced it and survived it bravely. Also, the effect on animals is described briefly in this chapter. 

In Andaman & Nicobar Island, a man named Ignesious lost his wife and three children when he rushed out of the house. Meghna, a thirteen-year-old girl, swept away along with her parents and seventy-seven people. Also, Almas saw her complete family swept away, and the incident made her traumatised. 

In Thailand, Tilly, a ten-year-old girl with her family was celebrating Christmas Eve on the beach. She then saw the beach was getting smaller and remembered the video of the Tsunamis; her geography teacher showed her in the class. She then, with her family and other tourists ran towards the hotel and were saved. 

Animals are more acute on hearing the Earth’s vibrations. So, most of the animals were found unharmed on the coast of India and Srilanka during the Tsunami. Also, a gentleman from Srilanka narrated that his dogs everyday go for walks near the beach, but that day, the dogs refused to step out of the house. 

Theme: The story is about the adverse effects of the Tsunami on the lives of the people. Here you will find different stories of people narrating their experience of the same.

Chapter 3: Glimpses of the Past

Summary: Chapter 3 begins with the topic Martyrs in which people are told about the sacrifices of Indian Martyrs who lost their lives while fighting for the country. The next topic describes the invention of the East India Company and the killing of brave Tipu Sultan of Mysore. 

Then, untouchability and declining of role of women started with the Company crippling the Indian industries. Then Raja Ram Mohan Roy, a man from Bengal, understood the wrong part of the country and abolished all the superstitions. 

The oppression from Britishers continued on Indians, and due to which, Indian industries began to fall. Britishers conquered almost the whole India and Indians lost their jobs and lands. Also, taxes continued to rise, and the Santhals rose in rebellion and killed Europeans. 

Later, sepoys revolted and united to fight against the Colonial rule. The rebellion spread wider and the landlords who lost their land also joined the battle. The fight for freedom in 1857 started, and all fought intense battles all over North India.

Theme: The story displays the glimpses of the past. The lesson will help you to understand the events that led to the first war of Independence in the year 1857.

Chapter 4: Bepin Choudhury’s Lapse of Memory

Summary: The story revolves around a man, Bepin Choudhury, who buys crime, ghost, and thrillers books every Monday. One fine Monday, when he was at the bookstore, a man greeted him. But Bepin babu failed to recognize him. Then, the man told him that they met in Ranchi in the year 58. 

Then, Bepin told the man that he never visited Ranchi and the man was mistaken for his identity. But the man insisted that Mr. Choudhury was the man who met him in Ranchi and even narrated numerous incidents that happened in Ranchi. 

Followed by several witnesses and incidents, Mr. Choudhury was not able to recollect his memory of visiting Ranchi. Then his doctor prescribed him to visit Ranchi once again as the sight of the place may help him to remind him of the moments. 

Later, when he got down at the station, he realized that he had never been there before. He visited many places in Ranchi but was not able to recollect his memory. When he was back in Calcutta, he called his doctor again and told him that everything was fine in Ranchi. Also, asked for a painkiller as he had a fall in Ranchi.

Theme: The NCERT Class 8 English Honeydew Chapter 4 is about a man Bepin Choudhury who was unable to recollect his memory of visiting Ranchi. The story then revolves around all the suspense related to Bipin Choudhury’s visit to Ranchi.

Chapter 5: The Summit Within

Summary: The lesson is a story of Major H.P.S Ahluwalia, who was a member of the first successful Indian expedition to Mount Everest in 1965. In this chapter, he narrates his experience of the same. 

He then stated that he felt tired, but he was not happy and was sad and jubilant. He assumed his sadness because he was left with no other higher peak to climb. He concluded that a person needs three qualities- power, persistence and endurance to climb a summit. 

Another thing essential for climbing is comradeship as a single person cannot think of becoming a climber. Helping one another in climbing is not only important for physical but also for emotional support. Being an honoured experience, a climber after reaching the peak, bows down to God. 

The climbing also changes a man completely. He then declares that every man has its mountain peak within him. You need to climb that by yourself only. To conclude, he describes that attaining internal summit and Mountain Everest summit is equal, and both changes the man completely.

Theme: The theme of the lesson states that every individual has a mountain peak to climb within himself. But because of the fear, a person didn't realize that. You need to achieve that internal summit to be satisfied and happy.

Chapter 6: This is Jody’s Fawn

Summary: The lesson revolves around a boy, Jody, who was kind and humble towards animals. The story began when Jody’s father was resting on a bed, and he asked his father, how he was feeling. Then, they discussed how the doe saved the life of his father when the snake had bitten him. 

Jody then told his father about the poor fawn and asked him how little fawn would manage without its mother. Also, Jody suggested to bring fawn to their home and take care of the fawn. Then, Jody with one of his father’s friends went into the place where they met the doe and fawn. 

When he found the fawn, Jody immediately hugged him and carried the fawn in his arms. Then they both ran towards Jody’s home. After reaching home, Jody offered the fawn with the morning’ milk which was kept in the kitchen safely.

Theme: In this story, Jody worries about the small fawn whose mother was killed by his father. He then decides to take care of the fawn.

Chapter 7: A Visit to Cambridge

Summary: Once England was famous for Cambridge, but now the country is also known for Stephen Hawking who is a successor of Issac Newton. He is a brilliant astrophysicist and is the author of “A Brief History of Time”. 

The author wanted to interview Stephen Hawking as he was himself on the wheelchair. Then, the author told Stephen that he felt very bad when people asked him to be brave. As Stephen Hawking was unable to speak, his computer voice replied that there is no other option left, apart from being brave. 

Then, the author asked other questions to which the computer voice replied. The writer felt that Hawking must be the most beautiful man in the world, but the writer was shaken when he saw a glimpse of the Stephen. 

To conclude, the author asked Hawking the last advice to all disabled people. To which voice replied that all disabled people must focus on the good things they have within and not be over-enthusiastic. The interview journey was inspiring for the author.

Theme: The story of NCERT Class 8 English Honeydew Chapter 7 deals with the conversation between two disabled men who share their experience of moving around in a wheelchair.

Chapter 8: A Short Monsoon Diary

Summary: The chapter includes some great extracts from Ruskin Bond’s diary. The author has written some beautiful moments, which he experienced during the monsoon months during his visit to Mussoorie. The season starts in June and ends in August. 

On June 24, the author experienced the mist over the hills, which has silenced the birds as well. Then on June 25, rain appeared warm and humid, and the author described the hill station as the paradise. After that, on June 27, seasonal flowers, leopard, new birds including minivets appeared. 

The first week of August experienced heavy rainfall, and the author was pleased with the sound of the rainfall on the tin. On 31st August, there was a sign that rains were coming to an end but the monsoon season continued till 3rd October. 

With beauty all around, the author wrote a poem on January 26 about winter rain as he was feeling lonely. There were no flowers and his friend also left him. Finally, on 23rd March, the author saw a rainbow in the clear sky.

Chapter 9: The Great Stone Face-I

Summary: The NCERT Class 8 English Honeydew Chapter 9 discusses the story of an old valley in which stones were thrown in the mountain in a way that they formed a human face. The resembled features of a human face was called the Great Stone Face. 

A boy named Ernest was told by his mother that as per the prophecy a man was destined to become the greatest and noblest person and an exact resemblance to the Great Stone Face. Then, the child grew up to be a quiet young man. 

Then, a native named Gathergold was referred by the people of the valley as the Great Stone Man, but Ernest was not satisfied with his face. After years, Ernest has grown up to be a man and it happened that another son of the valley had become a soldier. 

The soldier was called as “Blood-and Thunder”. When he visited the valley, people again considered him the Great Stone man as his face was exactly the same as the Great Stone Face. But Ernest was again disappointed and felt that the Great Stone man would come one day.

Theme: In the story, the shape of the mountain often reminds inhabitants of the valley of a prophecy.

Chapter 10: The Great Stone Face-II 

Summary: As the years passed, Ernest became a man of middle age and still a humble, hardworking and thoughtful person. While Ernest had been growing old, a native of the valley, a poet who used to spread sweet music everywhere was introduced in the chapter. 

The songs of the poet let Ernest believed that he was the man who was similar in the likeness of the Stone Face. When Ernest met poet, he told him he wants the poet to be the Great Stone man. 

Later, the poet makes Ernest realized that he was the actual man similar to Great Stone Face as he had all the qualities of the same. The people of the valley then saw the prophecy fulfilled. 

Ernest walked home with the poet hoping that someday, a wiser and better man than himself would appear and would become the exact resemblance to the Great Stone Face.
