Class 11 - English Hornbill

Chapter 1: The Portrait of a Lady

Summary: In this chapter of NCERT English Hornbill textbook, ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ Khushwant Singh gives a detailed portrayal of his grandmother. He recounts how he had spent his childhood with her grandmother in the village when his parents had migrated to the city.

He further explains that his grandmother was so old with a wrinkled face, that it was not easy to believe that she would ever have been pretty and young. However, she would always get the author ready for school and would escort him to school.

As the story evolves, both the author and his grandmother move to the city where the author’s parents reside. The author is then enrolled in English medium school, and her grandmother would no longer go to school with him.

As Khushwant Singh moved to university, and then abroad, the common link between him and her grandmother was broken. 

Upon the author’s return from abroad after five years, his grandmother welcomes him back with enthusiasm. Next morning, she gets ill, and eventually, she dies peacefully.

Chapter 2: We’re Not Afraid to Die

Summary: Narrated by Gordon Cook and Alan East, ‘We’re Not Afraid to Die’ is a story of courage and self-belief of a family that defied the odds to survive the treacherous voyage.

The protagonist of the story is Gordon Cook who along with his wife and children sat out for round-the-world voyage in 1976.

However, during their journey, Gordon Cook and his family began to face difficulty due to strong waves, inclement weather and endless rolling of the sea towards them.

The ship had water everywhere, and the ship was partially wrecked. Gordon Cook and his family were staring at death. 

However, in the time of difficulty, Gordon Cook, his wife and children showed great courage and were not at all afraid to die. Eventually, they reached a volcanic island in Amsterdam and survived.

Not much is known about the death of Tut. However, it has always been speculated that he was murdered due to some conspiracy. His death brought an end to the rule of powerful Pharaoh dynasty of Egypt.

In order to unfold the mystery behind Tut’s death, his mummy was scanned in 1922 which brought to light new observations regarding his death.

Tut’s mummy was again examined in 2005 by an expert of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. 

Although there were no significant findings, it did give certain clues regarding the mysterious death of Tut.

Chapter 6: The Browning Version

Summary: The play, ‘The Browning Version’ of NCERT is about a conversation that takes place between a teacher, Mr Frank and the student, Taplow. Taplow tells Mr Frank that although Mr Crocker Harris is heatless, he does not take pleasure in beating students. Taplow also reveals that in spite of all the things, he likes Mr Crocker Harris.

Chapter 7: The Adventure

When Professor Gaitonde gains consciousness, his friend Rajendra Deshpande justifies the strange behaviour of his friend on the grounds of lack of determinism theory in Quantum theory and catastrophe theory.
