The series of compression and rarefaction vary periodically at place in air as sound travel through it. Compression is the region where the density as well as pressure of the air is very high. Rarefaction is the region where the density as well as the pressure is very low. The Figure below shows the compression and rarefaction as the sound travels in a medium.
