Name the follow:

(i) The state of a cell when it cannot accommodate any more water ………………..

(ii) Pressure of the cell contents on the cell wall. ………………….

(iii) The part of a plant cell which is like the leather casing of a football ……………………

(iv) The condition that is opposite to turgid. …………………

(v) The state of a plasmolysed cell after the re-entry of water ………………………

(vi) The pressure under which water passes from the living cells of a root into xylem …………………….

Answer :

(i) Turgidity

Explanation: Turgidity is the state of a cell in which the cell wall is rigid and inflated because of the increase in size of vacuoles due to absorption of water.

(ii) Turgor pressure.

Explanation: it is the term given to the pressure exerted by the cell contain on the cell wall which is opposite to the pressure exerted by the cell wall.

Note: Both these pressures are important to maintain a definite structure of the cell or else the cell will be distorted.

(iii) Cell wall.

Explanation: As a leather casing protects the football inside it, similarly, the cell wall protects the cell from harm inside it.

(iv) Flaccid.

Explanation: It is the term given to the condition of the cell where the cell is no longer turgid and all its contents has shrunken due to excessive water loss.

(v) Deplasmolysed.

Explanation: It is the term given to the state of cell which regains its turgidity after it has been plasmolysed.

(vi) Root pressure.

Explanation: It is the pressure developed by the root due to the inflow of water which helps pushing the plant sap upwards.
