Maratha kingdoms were located mainly in the South-Western part of India.
The Maratha states were under the control of the different chiefs of different dynasties such as Sindhia, Holkar, Gaikwad and Bhonsle. The chiefs of different dynasties were held under the Confederacy or an alliance whose principle head or minister was Peshwa. Peshwa was the military and administrative head in Pune. In the late 18th century, Mahadji Sindhia and Nana Phadnis became the two famous Maratha soldiers and statesmen.
The company took over the Maratha kingdom with a series of wars –
• They signed the Treaty of Salbai after the end of the first war in 1782. In this war, there was no one won.
• Second AngloMaratha War (1803-05) – in this war, the British won the war and captured Orissa, territories north of the Yamuna river including Agra and Delhi.
• Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-19) – in this war British completely defeated the Maratha power. Peshwa was removed from power and sent to Bithur near Kanpur with a pension.
This way company took over the Maratha kingdom and gained control over the territories south of the Vindhyas.
