“In a well-managed transport system, various modes complement each other”. Elaborate.
Transport is that facility or services used for the carriage of goods as well as individuals from a place to another by employing animals, humans and different types of vehicles. Such motion occurs over water, air and land. The importance of modes is dependent on the kind of services and goods to be transported, the mode accessible, and the costs of transport. The international motion of goods is regulated by ocean freighters. Road transportation is faster as well as cheaper over shorter distances in addition to door-to-door services. Railways tend to be most suited for larger capacity of bulky materials over long distances within a nation. Light, perishable and high-value goods are best moved via airways.
No transport system tends to be self-sufficient. For possessing a well-managed transport system, a correct link between all modes is necessary. Ports act as a point of collection of goods that are carried by waterways; such ports must possess efficient linkage with roadways as well as railways for the purpose of taking goods to interiors.
Railways are efficient in linking far-off locations, but they are incapable of penetrating deeper into interiors or supply door-to-door services, for which an efficient road system in addition to transportation facilities such as buses should be available.
