If one adrenal gland is removed, the other one gets enlarged to some extent to meet the requirement of secretion of hormones that are required by our body for proper functioning.
Adrenal gland has an outer cortex and inner medulla. Various types of cortical hormones like mineralocorticoids [aldosterone], glucocorticoids etc. are secreted by the adrenal cortex. Similarly adrenaline, nor-adrenaline are secreted by the adrenal medulla. So to meet the proper requirements of these hormones for proper regulation of our body the other gland gets enlarged to some extent if one adrenal gland is removed.
