Sex ratio indicates gender balance in the population. In most parts of the world, there are more females than males. Even though male babies are born more than female babies making it roughly 943 to 952 female babies per 1000 males. There are two reasons for the sex-ratio to be in favour of females -
• During the early years of birth, Girl babies are considered to have better resistance to diseases than male babies.
• In most societies, women tend to survive more than men during the last years of the lifecycle. Thus, there are older women than men.
Due to these two reasons, the sex ratio happens to be 1050 females per 1000 males in most perspective but in some countries like China, South Korea and in India sex ratio is declining. It is because in Indian society males are valued more than women causing a preference for a son and neglecting girl babies.
