The Indian National Congress was founded on 28 December 1885 by Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British officer, who wanted to create a platform where the educated Indian people could have a civic and political dialogue with the representatives of the British Raj. Prior to independence it was considered one of the most prominent Indian public organization, and gained popularity as the central and defining influence of the long Indian Independence Movement. During the early years of Independence, it was a social and ideological coalition of seemingly opposite groups of people with contradictory interests. It managed to create a unity between these diverse groups through tolerance of internal differences, compromise and inclusiveness and avoiding extreme positions, all of which contributed towards its dominance.
