Haloarenes can be prepared from amines by Sandmeyer’s reaction. In this process, a primary aromatic amine which is dissolved or suspended in cold aqueous mineral acid, is treated with sodium nitrite and a diazonium salt is formed. This freshly prepared salt when mixed with cuprous chloride replaces the diazonium group with -Cl, forming the aryl chloride. The compound Y is option (i) which is the aryl chloride.
