How will you show with an example that metal oxides are basic in nature? Give the chemical equation also.
Answer :
Bases generate OH- ions when dissolved in water. Metal oxides when dissolved in water form respective hydroxides. This proves that metal oxides are basic in nature.
For example: When sodium oxide reacts with water, it gives sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide contains OH- ions which show that sodium oxide is basic in nature. The reaction is given as:
Na2O+H2O→2NaOH
