In India, modern towns have developed post-independence. The British as well as other Europeans have developed various towns in India, whereby initiating their foothold in coastal regions, they first developed certain trading ports like Daman, Surat, Puducherry, Goa, Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), and Chennai (Madras). Later on, they developed chief nodes of Chennai (Madras), Kolkata (Calcutta), and Mumbai (Bombay).

They established hilltowns like summer resorts, administrative centres, and joined military areas to them. Post-independence, a larger quantity of towns were developed like administrative headquarters, for example, Bhubaneswar, Dispur, Chandigarh, Gandhinagar, etc. in addition to industrial centres like Bhilai, Barauni, Durgapur, Sindri, etc. Some old tows were also developed like satellite towns around metropolitan cities like Rohtak, Ghaziabad, and Gurgaon around Delhi.
