NHRC is a constitutional body that was formed in 1993 to protect and uphold the rights of the citizens. It protects our rights by performing its function:
a) It ensures and reports on human rights violations by public servants and officials. It registers complaints and follows up on them adequately.
b) It intervenes in the court cases that involve violation of human rights. It can conduct independent investigation into such matters and also make suggestions for monetary reparations etc.
c) It provides human rights education to the citizens through textbooks, pamphlets, write-ups, essays and rural programs aimed at increasing awareness about our rights and how they are protected.
d) It works to provide an amplifier to the voices of NGOs and various other institutions involved in human rights protection.
