The Representation of The People Act 1950, was enacted that contains the code of conduct of the elections (qualifications, disqualifications for the membership, the corrupt practices, other election offences).
The Model Code of Conduct was agreed, where EC ensure free and fair election. (There are a certain set of guidelines for the political parties and leaders, which they need to abide by or else it leads to disqualification of their candidature).
The rules are:
1. The contestants cannot bribe the voters or threaten them.
2. No use religion or caste as a tool to gain votes.
3. No to use government resources during campaigns.
4. Spend more than 25 lakhs in a constituency for Lok Sabha and 10 lakh in the assembly election.
